Note: Crimea is part of Ukraine, whose only official time zone is Eastern European Time (EET). Under the Russian occupation, however, clocks in Crimea de facto follow Moscow Time (MSK).

By default the clock comes from your own device, so it shows your local time wherever you are - no location lookup required. Your browser tells us which time zone you're in (for example Europe/London or America/New_York), which is what we show first. When you pick a different time zone, we take that same device clock and simply convert it to the local time of the zone you chose.
Your device keeps its clock in sync with internet time servers. Time servers use atomic clocks (via radio) or GPS signals and can be found in universities and other public institutions across the world - that's how you can always see the correct time.
Each country sets its own official time relative to UTC. In the United Kingdom, the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, London, is the historic home of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), the basis of today's UTC. More info on this topic on Wikipedia.
